Identity Theft Protection - distant selling

My father (who is an easy target and finds it difficult to say no!) received a call on 18th December 2008 from a company selling identity theft protection (can't remember the name of the company).
He told them he was interested but wanted to see some details in writing.
He has never received any information in the post.
My father has recently received his credit card statement which shows a sum of £150 (!!!) having been deducted on 24th December 2008 for this insurance.
My mother (who is not happy!!) has written to the company to explain that they had never received the written information and therefore required a refund.
The comany have written back and said the refund request is refused beause they are outside of the 14 day cooling off period. My mother is furious!
I appreciate that my father has been somewhat stupid here and has obviously given his card details to the company.
Are they completely stuffed or is it worth taking this further?
They have still not received any written confirmation although the company claim they sent a letter on 18th Dcember 2008.
I would appreciate any advice.
