Selling your house without an agent

Has anybody done this? Can anybody tell me if it is worth trying?
When we bought our last house we didn't go near an estate agents office, we used the internet to search for houses. The agent selling ours was rubbish - we seemed to do most of the work, correcting and improving the details they sent out, and showing people round. I resent paying thousands of pounds to an agent, but with the market still slow, is it worth marketing the house ourselves?
Does anbody know which websites would be good for people selling directly?
I was thinking we could put our own board up with our phone number and maybe take a couple of ads out in the local paper, with a picture, as well as getting listed on a website or two. I think this will prove cheaper, but will it sell my house?

I think it will depend on whether the market is buoyant in your area & whether you live on a fairly busy road where people will see the sign. When trying to sell without an agent the problem is reaching the possible viewers/buyers.
Estate agents are usually people's first port of call when searching for property, even if people are searching the net, the properties there are generally listed by estate agents using either their own websites, a property finding website or a combination of both.
Not everybody who is searching for property will come from the local area, so they are unlikely to see ads in a local paper.
When I'm looking for property I use a combination of registering with as many ea's in the area & doing searches with property websites.
I've always felt I've had value from ea's I've sold properties through as they have marketed my properties well & achieved excellent selling prices.
Maybe your answer is to try to sell yourself & see how it goes for a few weeks & if there is no interest shown, then find yourself a decent ea.
Good luck. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

Just careful which contract you sign with an EA, do not go for sole selling rights nor Sole Agency, you could come unstuck!!
