If you're running full versions of all those anti-spyware progs, likely you've got a conflict going on in there somewhere. Keep MBAM running in real-time, but turn off spyware doctor. spybot's resident shield should be ok (but NOT tea-timer), and also stop SAS. Avast isn't too much of a resource hog...

If it's any consolation, I've got avast, spyware doctor's intelliguard and spybot's resident shield all running on my pc, and it tootles along pretty well...think you may have just a couple TOO many on the go :)

p.s. it looks like his java's well out of date, download latest (ver 6.11) and uninstall earlier versions in add/remove programs....may not help and will carry vunerabilities...

GunJack, thank you, exactly the information I was looking for. I had them ALL (Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, Spyware Doctor and Spybot) monitoring in the background with no problems, but Dolphin67's PC throws a major wobbler trying to start Superantispyware. I told him to turn off real-time protection/start up with Windows/the splash screen.

After reading your post I've turned off Superantispyware's monitoring and start-up with Windows. Malwarebytes, Spyware Doctor and Spybot are still in the background though. I didn't realise all those spyware programmes would clash with one another!

Loulou....how's it runing/starting up now you've done al this ??? Although if you've got full MBAM, I'd also be inclined to stop spyware doctor as mentioned earlier. One real-time spyware scanner should be fine to run with, but by all means keep the others for on-demand scanning.....

Theres TWO defrag programs running (3 if vistas is running too!)
remove TUNEUP from running at startup (In fact id personally recommend NOT using tuneup as it has been known to delete things it shouldnt)

    Alcohols not needed at startup

Spybots 'tea timer' can cause all sorts of conflict issues

Things on mine are fine, though I'll turn off Spyware Doctor too, like you've suggested.

I'm looking at Tuneup's Startup Manager on mine and I don't see Alcohol or TuneUp listed at startup?

Dolphin67's set up is similar to mine as I put his PC programs together (though I use Comodo, he uses Windows Firewall as I felt Comodo was too "naggy" for him).

Last night he said that the latest Windows Update (Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86) installs then sits at 99% forever and sticks (I've got it on automatic updating so he doesn't ignore updates, as he was inclined to before). I'm surprised he hasn't posted.

Maybe he's ok now, because I haven't heard anything.

For dolphin and lulu - looks like you're making progress (on dolphin's ) and sliding back (on lulu's ) going by dolphin's pm's. Have advised D to do the next bits and post the logs on here...more visibility can often lead to more help, and there are higher-level techies around here than me...I'm learning though ;) Seriously, will get a better response from a wider audience:)

GunJack, I didn't know Dolphin67 was PMing you until he mentioned it. I did tell him different opinions would be more helpful, instead of hijacking someone (there's a joke in there somewhere)

The last I heard he was having blue screens, so no idea what's went wrong now.

One thing that won't be helping is that he's not careful where he clicks. I told him to go on download.com and it turned out he was downloading from one of the dodgy ads above the "proper" link.

That'll be three times he's had to scrub his hard disk/Windows.

Loulou - it's beginning to sound like that may be the best thing if it's got that bad......complete fresh re-install...get the right security progs (you may have a good idea on this one ;)) and try again......and education, education, education on surfing habits :)

p.s. I didn't mind the pm's, just thought it was a bit restrictive towards getting the problems solved....good luck (again)
