This SOA is for this month only - and what a mess it is. Have booked a call with CCCS for Monday to talk through what I can do, but would have enough cash to pay insurance, phone, gas, electric etc if only RBS would let me view my current account online! I guess it is the missed £306 DD to their own loan that has !!!!!! them off this month.

Well done for posting the SOA.:T

    Now. Silly / obvious question time. ;)

It seems you have take a mortgage out for you mum and she is paying it back to you via rents? Have I got that right? What is the deal there?

Why is your OH not working?

When does the mortgage "holiday" on your own mortgage end? and when it ends what will your monthly mortgage payment be?

    Best,
  • OK Best - I appreciate that you are trying to understand my situation. Here goes:
Yes, in 2003 I remortgaged my current home to buy a house for my mum to live in as she was made homeless from her rented accommodation. She has her own problems and I was able to do it for her at the time. The house she lives in (and I own) is currently worth about ~£60-70k. The only loan outstanding on it is the small extra mortgage that I took out at the time, about £19k balance now. I guess in an ideal world I would kick out my mum, sell the house and I would be debt free - but who would do that to their own mum? My mum pays me £300 to cover mortgage repayments (£205 per month which are up to date), insurance and tax.I have a little bit left over for me, but my own mortgage was increased by £20k to pay the deposit, so it's not really profit - try telling that to the tax man!

My hubby doesn't have a full time job that pays a regular income. It's complicated, but I love him and he's a fantastic support to me and a great dad. We've just sort of ended up where I earn the bucks and he looks after the kids. He dabbles in Ebay and stuff which makes him spare cash to live on, but not enough to rely on as a family. When I go back to work full time he needs to be at home to look after the children (age 4 and 8mths) or we would not be able to afford childcare. He is fully aware of the situation and supports me when he can - he gave me £100 today - which he had saved up in Paypal - towards my bills.
My mortgage holiday ends March 2009 and on 1 April 2009 I will be back paying £991 per month to Northern Rock on a 5 yr fixed 6.5% rate until 2 bloody thousand and 12. Tell me about it - I was gutted when the rates came down! But by March 2009 I will be earning full time again - back to £2500 earnings income instead of £400.

So, do I just brave it out with RBS and point out that I am a good earner just having a lean time, or wait until I have had my CCCS call and include RBS in my list of creditors?

I have done my snowball calculator and, once I am back at work and can pay my debts again, I will be debt free by 2012 - but only if this month I don't get into a financial nightmare!

Is it possible to make the mortgage interest only for a short while?

Have you looked at your credit file recently? Just wondered how many credit checks you have had recently - in the last 6 months. You can have about 3 in a 6 month period before your credit score is affected.

The reason i ask is because you are paying quite high interest on the Cap1 and Egg cards. (I take it the others are not at 0% APR?) If you were able to get a virgin creditcard, this offers 0% interest for 16 months, minimum payment from 2nd month onwards of £25 and you would also be able to transfer money to your current account without it beingclassed as a cash advance. Just make sure you never spend on the card. This way you could be saving about £60pm on the minimum payment, saving by not paying interest on this amount and getting some cash into your account to deal with the more urgent debts. The only reason i suggest this is because it is 0% and you should hopefully be in a better position by the time the 0% ends.
After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

    Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
    Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0

    Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/2011
  • Thanks George - I see what you're saying and I suppose I can try. Pretty certain my credit rating's crap - have got into arrears before but always caught up by making lump sum payments. They can only turn me down.

Both Egg an Cap 1 have increased the APR on my cards over the years (!) I've had them. Both were low to start with. Tried balance transfers before, but was never offered a high enough credit limit to transfer the total amount owed accross , and well now I don't think I will qualify for any credit at all!

I am just about ready and mentally prepared to make a payment arrangement with all of them to get me out of this mess. When I am earning again I will overpay and clear the debt in 2.5 years. Sod the credit rating, never planning on needing credit again!

    Hi K,

I think there is no issue with you being the bread winner and your other half looking after home / children. If he is supportive and a great dad. That is priceless and he (and you;) ) should be proud of that. There is no more important job for a bloke than trying to do our best as a committed husband and a dad and it sounds like he is doing that.

Both of you working does not make sense due to childcare costs etc would eat up the 2nd salary. However there may be other ways he could work a few hours part time at the weekend / or from home / earn a bit of extra cash etc

In regard to your mums house that all makes sense and there is no issue there in that arrangement. I would keep it as it is as you have an asset / income there for the future.

I think if I was you I would have a chat with RBS (as per my post number 9)and see what they say / recommend and then run that past the CCS on Monday.

Time for some kip for me soon as my turn on the early shift in the morning and our toddler always wakes up at 7.00am ;)

Keep posting. I will keep an eye on this thread.

    I wish you well.

    Best.

You have my sympathies. In similar positionexcept I am due back in mid April 2009. All I can suggest is you contact all you creditors to inform them of the situation and make payments rather than ignore things even a few ££ shows willing KWIM.

I alsohave a loan with RBS and we sounded them out in November about a possible payment holiday to ease pressure and To be honest I found them unwilling to listen or help to the extent that I have actually opened a new current account with another provider and will be switching soon.

  • Dear Kimdegsidash,

my sympathies, it is hard enough with two little ones without money worries.

could your husband work some hours when you don't? Even if only a few and local so cheap to get there?

If it wouldn't interfere with breasfeeding babe, could you go back to work early?I know is horrid thought, but you only have to give a month's notice of your return, I think?

    All the best.

  • Hi grateful
Have already given notice (8wks with my employer!) and going back on 2 March. So my debt repayment problems are really only short term until wage kicks in again at end of March. But of course I will have built up 2 months arrears by then and all the associated harrassment that goes with that.

Am going to ring RBS on Monday morning - using the great advice already given here - and ask for my current account to be revealed back to me online so that I can manage it properly.

I've often thought how much easier it would be if hubby got a regular paid part time job - but when I go back to work full time that would mean paying for expensive local childcare (the only local private nursery charges £42 for a full day or £22 for half day) - so not an option when he wouldn't even earn that. However, he is supportive and does make money on Ebay on online poker (don't ask! He is very good at it and plays very carefully/wisely using the system to keep a safe balance and only withdrawing his winnings). We discussed our current situation at length and he has started giving me the money that he makes which is great.

I will take positive action to resolve these short term problems on Monday and post back with my news then. I can't begin to say how fantastic this forum is for providing support, advice and helping to reduce/repay debts the right way. I'm a real convert!
