The cheapest way to do this??

I own a car and am the main driver. Husband is a named driver for my car also.
Husband is main driver on his car with me as a named driver.
We have a 17 year old with a car. Insurance for him as named driver on his car is unbelievable
How can we do it cheaper?
Have been told that we can't take out 2 seperate policies for my car and his with me as the main driver and him as a named driver, as it is illegal for me to hold 2 seperate policies for 2 different cars.
A multi car policy has refused to have him only as a named driver as the car is his but if I go as the named driver it brings the premiums down.
Anyone got any advice?????
Please

Because of the irresponsible attitudes of some, all 17-year-old drivers are considered a huge risk, and policies will be astronomically high, at least for the first few years.
Any advice, therefore, must necessarily be limited, but we can give it a go. Is his car a small and efficient one in a low insurance class? Is it a type that is popular among boy racers? Have you asked about increasing the excess? - sometimes putting it very high can reduce the premium as the chance of the insurance company having to pay out is reduced to next to nothing.
It is illegal to put yourself as the main driver on a policy when you know you're not, and given your description of your household I think it's unlikely they'd accept it even if you did pretend. Do you really need three cars though? I mean, are you so reliant on cars that he can't just share yours or your husband's when he wants it? It's not a good answer, but the best way to reduce his premiums is for him not to have a car, or even to drive at all, right now.0 -
It is illegal to to take out a policy with you as the main driver and him as a named driver if the car is his and he is the main driver, it is known as 'fronting' and in the case of an accident you may find the insurance invalid.

Some insurers will allow you to have a policy on your car with you as main driver and a policy on his car with him as main driver and you as named driver. That way you can use your NCD for the car that he uses. It does mean that you won't have NCD on your car, but will work out a lot cheaper than the other way round. The risk is that your NCD will suffer if he has a claim.
Otherwise its a question of getting a group 1 car, having your son as main driver and adding you as named driver.
Check what the rate will be when he passes his test, as some insurers add on a lot at that point.
For a male 17 year old with no experience driving a group 1 car, we paid nearly £2k!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I took all our cars to Admiral in September. They were cheaper for my Accord and also cheaper for our Lexus. I insured 19 year old DS's 1.4 Corsa (57) for £750. He has 3 points for speeding. I insured 17 year old DD's 1.0 (52) Corsa for £700. She had and still has a provisional licence. It also worked out cheaper to put myself and OH on both the Corsa's as it brought the price down. With a previous insurer, only DH was on the policy, as by adding me, it made it more expensive.
Different companies have different policies. When DS was learning to drive, I insured the Corsa, with him as a named driver. That cost £1600 three years ago. As soon as he passed his test, he became the main driver.
We have certainly benefitted from Admiral, and so have friends of mine. All you can do is shop around. I did, and it saved me a lot of money.0
