Does the joint account customer (i.e. 2nd applicant) have to use the 1st applicants online banking details to perform banking activities, or can the join account customer sign up for another online banking account?

You are not allowed to use the other account holder's login details to access an account online.
If you have a joint account, you will need to register separately. The account details will show up on your online banking screen, and you will be able to do transactions, see statements, etc.
Register yourself, to get your own separate username and login details.0 -
As post #3 ..... if there's any fraud on the account and it becomes obvious you are sharing Login data .. you may get little sympathy from the Bank. You need your own discrete Login details (separate username / password etc).If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

If you have a joint account (as we do ) how on earth do the bank know which of you is useing the account?I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

They can tell if it's the bloke logging in as it only takes one correct try.
If it's the woman logging in it usually takes at least three attempts.:p0 -
If it's a one-to-sign account (which it will have to be to be able to be accessed online) it doesn't matter to the bank who makes the transaction, because both have equal authority0

For Lloyds at least, multiple users can access one account, multiple accounts can be accessed by one user.
For example, I login and get:
My current
My savings
Joint current
Joint savings
My credit card
OH gets:
Her current
Her savings
Joint Current
Joint Savings
You get the idea...0
