Fault on BT phone

Options
If you have a fault on your line and you ring BT to complain, they will often tell you that they will check the line and indicate whether there is a fault or not. Sometimes the fault can be down to your equipment in which case they make a charge to come out if it is found to be your equipment that is at fault.

When you ring the faults line to report the problem, you will be asked whether or not you are the owner of the line. If you say no they will check the line for you anyway and possibly send someone out to sort out your problem. If you have not asked them to come to see you then you cannot be billed for the problem rectification if it is found to be your fault.

A good tip though is that if you have a fault to do some initial problem determination yourself by disconnecting all things connected to the phone line (including Sky etc) and then gradually reconnect the equipment one by one until such a time as the problem re-occurs. I often find that Broadband filters are to blame.

If it is a crackling or noise on the line, dial 17070 and select 'Silent line test'. You might need to press secrecy and be in a quiet room. This will provide you with silence to hear any noises on the line. ;)
