Like cis says, you can stop most benefits at any time, with the exception of tax credits. Bear in mind, however, that if you ask to stop your tax credits, you may be hit by a nasty overpayment bill in the following year. The best way to avoid this problem is not to make a claim for tax credits in the first place.

Tax credits are only really recommended for homeowners. If you're a tenant, then claiming tax credits could adversely affect your housing benefit. Combine the immediate housing benefit loss with the subsequent tax credit overpayment demands, and it could leave you worse off than you would have been if you never claimed tax credits in the first place.

I really cannot understand the mentality behind some of the benefits
  • the idea of the ctc and wtc is to stop claims for housing benifit and council tax benifit they reckon with these credits you can afford to pay your own ct and hb
  • Best bet is to be up front and tell both the DWP and your Local Authority the correct date that you actually recommenced your self employment from. Then again you may get lucky, really depends on what type of self employment you are involved in e.g if your a taxi driver then your laughing as we all know that they only work for the good of mankind and earn about £20 per week. :rotfl: ;) :A

However, you may be extremely unlucky and be picked up via one of the many relentless data matching excerises that both the DWP and L.As are constantly churning out. In which case the Fraud chappies will pay you a visit in about six months

If it is of any help to you a couple of years ago I went self employed and just happen to inherit an amount of money which took me above the savings limit.

I rang them up and put in writing that I no longer wished to claim from.....date...and that was it, no questions asked. Being free of claiming housing benefit is one of the most liberating feelings I can tell you.....!:)

It really pees me off this attitude to taxi drivers. Its not all roses you know, try paying the expenses they pay and try taking some of the abuse they get. There are massive outgoings with a taxi business and alot of c**p that comes with it.

  • :A No offence intended, the vast majority of taxi drivers are good honest hard working individuals who can indeed be forced to pay out most of their earnings to continue operating. Sadly however not all taxi drivers / taxi operators are squeaky clean (as is the case in most professions) and have sullied the reputation for all. :A

You are forgiven. Thanks for the polite response.Didnt mean to snap your head off (even though i did, lol)

Its just the last year or two has been incredibly hard for hy husband who works long hours, sometimes to just about cover his expenses. Taxi driving definitely isnt as good as it used to be for various reasons. Maybe the passengers are doing what we do here, moneysaving. Anyway i will pass back to the op`s subject
