2 car couple - best insurance set-up?

Hi
My OH and I own a car each (one small runabout and one larger for longer distances)

We both need to drive to work and depending on the type of journey etc will agree between us which car each uses for any one journey.

At the moment we both have fully comp protected policies However, we understand that if there is a claim when driving the car that individual doesnt own (on registration doc and insurance policy) then we would only be covered third party F&T.

Is that correct?
If so, is it possible to insure both cars with the same insurer for either of us to drive and be fully comprehensively covered for any journey in either of the cars?

Does anyne know which company might sell this type of cover Please?
At the moment we pay about £250 each per year and obviously wouldnt want to spend more. It seems unfair to pay for fully comp on both cars when we could both have an accident in each other'scar and not be able to claim (if it were our fault).

We cant be the only family who manages their car use like this????
What do others do?

Thanks for your responses.

I may be wrong, but I thought named drivers on a fully comp policy were also covered fully comp along with the policy holder.

The only possible issue I can see may be declaring who is main user of each car, this may cause some debate in the instance a claim is made. I am sure somebody with more experience will be able to clarify this.

You don't say if you and your wife and named drivers on each others policies.
If you are'nt named drivers then yes, you are usually only covered 3rd party when driving another car.

If you are'nt named drivers on each others policies I'd advise doing so, this clears up the problem as named drivers are fully comp along with the policy holder.

Yes we are both named drivers on each others policies. Does that mean we are covered fully comprehensively for all journeys then?
I hope so - that just leaves the main user question I guess. As the majority of each use is in the car in that persons registered ownership (and ins policy) then hopefully we are OK.
I'm wondering if other families are in the same position.
(hopefully having both had individual policies in our own names for about 30 years the ins companies would "trust" us??)

there are some insurers prefer for one person who is listed as the main driver to also be the person the car is registered too.

my OH and I have 2 cars, both cars are registered in my name - no particular reason why.
we have separate insurances in our own names, but with each other as a named driver. so we are both covered fully comp on both cars
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

Yes, if you are a named driver you are fully comp. You have been rated and priced on that basis.

Are you married? If so, the cars are owned by yourselves jointly anyway as joint assets. The registration of the car doesn't mean ownership.

The main driver bit as with lots of insurance bit is always cloudy, my friend is married and they have 2 cars. He does the most miles in both cars but his wife uses 1 of them 5 days a week and he uses one 5 days a week and the other for 2 days a week.

I would say you are overthinking it and you are fine the way you are on the policies.

  • Thanks for your post.

There isnt a cheaper way of insuring for our joint use then is there?

I was wondering if there was a "multi user" and "multi car" type policy for whichever car either person drives at any time - like main driver and named driver for two registered vehicles?"

Just thought there might be a better way than we are insured at the moment.
    Thanks
