Cancelling Car Insurance problems

Hi
I am after a bit of help and advice and was wondering if anyone had any ideas.
We have just changed cars and bought nd got a much cheaper car insurance quote with another company. We rang the old insurance company a while back to check about cancelling and were told there would be a £25 cancellation fee as we had just renewed which was fair enough.
They have now told us we need to pay the cancellation fee plus £25 for the rest of the legal cover on the policy plus £75 for the remainder of the breakdown cover coming to a grand total of £125!!!! so we will be paying for breakdown cover which doesn't exist.
However we have actually saved over £125 on the new quote so still don't want to amend the old policy but it still seems an awful lot to pay.
Is this correct and are they in their right to do this or should we complain and does anyone have any ideas how to get round it.
I am thinking the insurance company must pay the breakdown cover people in advance and this is why they want us to cover it but surley we shouldn't have to pay for cover that doesn't exist.
Any advice would be greatley appreciated.

I take it you asked for breakdown when you took out the policy0

Yes the policy had breakdown and legal cover.
What I don't understand is sayon our other car where I have RAC cover direct with RAC if I rung the RAC up they would credit me back for the unused cover or just stop my monthly payment.0 -
Check your policy booklet and terms and conditions to do with cancellation since those were the rules you agreed to when you took out the insurance0

Some of the addons for insurance are non refundable. In particular breakdown cover.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
