Direct Line Home Insurance

Yesterday I got my renawal notice from Direct Line home insurance, sadly it had gone up by almost £100. Today I gave them a call to ask why this was as we had made no claims and the letter with the renawal notice said I had a 10% discount applied because I made no claims.

They explained that I had originally received a 25% online discount and this didn't apply to renewals. They then asked if I had found other cheaper quotes. I said 'yes'.

I was then put straight through to their retentions teams. I was asked what the cheapest quote I had received was, which I told them. I was put on hold for a couple of minutes and listened to the gentle tones of Tom Jones.

After a couple of minutes the nice lady came back on and said she could give me a 30% discount which means I am paying less than last year :T

A 5 minute phone call just saved me well over £100, I am rather chuffed at the moment. Having previously made a couple of car claims through Direct Line I have been impressed with how they handle claims, so I don't feel I am getting second rate service for a cheaper price.

Excellent news, did you also go through Martins article to check it is competitive with the new discount?

There is also a travel insurance guide too, i used it again yesterday - flexicover won and Quidco at 15% on the pre tax price.

Absolutely, the quote from Direct Line beat all the others using Martin's process....hence me feeling a bit smug. I quoted the price from the best of the rest and Direct Line beat it.

It just goes to show, you don't ask you don't get. Sometimes it pays to be a bit cheeky.

Sadly no cash-back, but all the insurers offering cash back were giving quotes that made me laugh out loud.
