Areas in Belfast: Advice

Hi,

Sorry if there's a thread somewhere here where I could have added this query, but I couldn't see one.

Looking to rent a place with my girlfriend and we've found a place in Rainey Way in Belfast.

It's in a little enclosed group of streets behind the car park that is near the cinema on Dublin Road.

The flat is great but I'm not too sure about the area.

Does anyone know?

I want to live in a mixed area but I saw a few flags that would worry me a bit.

Any info would be great.

Cheers

  • unfortunately for people who live in belfast it's the minority of people who insist on putting sectarian flags out (and they are sectarian) that makes a place undesirable for people to live in (unless they are sectarian too).

i personally would avoid any area that has flags in it. however, i don't think that particular area is one of the worse spots in belfast. at least, i haven't heard that it is. and i've walked through it several times - even at night - and it always seems quiet to me.

but i can say is avoid the markets area like the plague.

    Cheers for the reply.

    Yeah, it did seem quiet.

But there was big Union jack flag on the side of one of the houses. As you say, flags (from either side here) always put me off a bit.

I have a vague recollection of seeing a bonfire in the area before you enter the place, but i'm not sure.

On the other hand, like you, i've never heard of it as a bad spot before and, apart from a few kids hanging about, I didn't notice anything dodgy when we went for a viewing.

    So torn over it!

Apartment was lovely, but feeling safe is paramount. Want to live in a place my girlfriend feels safe walking in and out of.

You could try posting this on the northern ireland thread too although it might take a while to get a response. I don't know the area myself as I live way out of Belfast, but there are are a few flags dotted around my town & it doesn't mean much here....
