 No, it's not "another wind up". I'll explain it in simple, logical terms to you :

Do you go to the doctors every 6-12 months for a check-up if you're feeling perfectly fine? No. So why should it be any different for your eyes? If you can see fine and your eyes aren't giving you any issues then I see no reason to go and get them checked every 6-12 months.

Seems that this is turning into an 'unnecessary scaremongering' thread after all.

Yes it's like cancer remission if they removed it whats the point of going back every year if you feel fine.

Lets see how you feel about things like that when you are older. or when you actualy find out you have got somthing and go blind.

I would surgest you read up on the eye problems stated rarther than scoffing at them as unnesissery as many are to late when you start to notice a difference.

You're right Rob, we don't go to the docs every 6 months to a year. But equally I wouldn't wait 20 years between eye tests. Could there be some middle ground here?
Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

  • If a GP was able to look immediately inside you and notice any precursory signs of disease in a simple, non-invasive and quick procedure then yes it probably would be recommended to go for regular check ups!

As it happens no such procedure exists, luckily though for eyes it does!!

Why do you feel it necessary to discourage people from going for an eye test,
apart from to wind people up?

Incidentally eye check ups are recommend every two years, not every 6 months - you could try and do a better job of sounding like you know what you are talking about really!!

I'm not "discouraging" anyone any more than you are "encouring" them! My opinion is that if your eyes aren't causing you any bother then I see no reason to go for an eye test when I've got better things to do with my time. I am entitled to that opinion just as you are entitled to your opinion of telling people to go for an eye test every other day in case they may have a brain tumour.

What are you having a go at me for? You've had your say, I've had mine. Deal with it.

Absolutely, but it's still the individual's choice and I don't agree with everyone ripping PN apart for her choice in not being bothered to get one done.

No one ripped her apart they just stated why they are important unless you feel perminantly damadged sight, the loss of your driving licence, job, etc. and possible blindenss are un-important.
it was more of a cry of care than attack.

So presumably you never get your car serviced, go to the dentist for a checkup or take out insurance for anything (hey, my house hasn't been burgled, why bother!)
Going for an eye test every two years is not exactly onerous, and while some of the conditions people of mentioned are rare, they can have serious consequences.

Your earlier suggestion about going to the doctors is actually quite a good one. I haven't seen my GP in about 8 years, but if I could go every so often for an 'MOT' checking blood pressure, cholesterol level, blood sugar, and whatever else is thought useful. then I certainly would.
