Refinery Walkouts

I don't actually think there will be much incentive for Italian builders to come here and work anyway, it'll be cheaper for the contractor to employ yokels. People only move abroad to work if they're going to make more money, not less.I'll have some cheese please, bob.0

It's time to bring all the ex pats home, shut the Channel Tunnel and the airports and pull up the shutters. British Recession for British ex-workers is our new battle cry. No more trade with Johnny foreigner. Buy British, sell British, and er. thats it.
I for one will only be watching British made films and television, only watching the local news, and listening to home grown music. Eating British food, and definitely not working for multi national companies anymore.
Under extreme circumstances I will agree to trade with the Welsh, and possibly the Scots. But that's it.
I do hope those Union leaders, and their colleagues will not be holidaying abroad this year and taking our hard earned British pounds out of the country.
I love mewbie. I enjoy and relate to his sarcasm, bitterness and wit in the same way I imagine balanced people feel when they hear Barack Obama speak.0 -
"Italian workers arrive for work at the Lindsey Oil Refinery"
I just love, really love, that the BBC chose a picture of three guys, two of whom are making obscene gestures.
"Not only are we taking your jobs, we'll do them a lot slower than you and probably sleep until lunchtime every day. Have it."0 -

And then take a Siesta from 12 till 4'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
The story was carried by ITN on 6-30 news, appears that more than 600 walked out today and are expected to tomorrow, they said this included staff from one power station, are we now to get power cuts to go with the 3 day week? Its like living in a time warp for those of us who suffered the 1970s.
Wheres Browns empty promise of british jobs for british workers?
Mind you we must be careful as protectionism is what turned the 1930s recession into a depression,do we really want to go back down that route?0 -
Since I started this thread we the BBC (and only the BBC as far as I know though I have just crossposted) are reporting it on page 114 on ceefax

On a more serious note there was a pretty good interview between Eddie Mair on Radio 4's PM this evening and the HR Director of the company that employed the Italian firm.
He explained that the company set out the rates of pay they were willing to pay and put the job out to tender. A number of companies applied and they assessed which company to take based on the presentation they gave, their previous work, value for money and a number of other factors. He stated that the Italian company were the best suited, so they picked them. He also pointed out that when they have tendered for jobs in the oast they have often picked English companies over foreign ones for exactly the same reasons. Seems fair enough.
Having seen the spirit and pure balls of the Italian employees I can see why they got the job.0 -
I am not surprised by this at all. Watching the news tonight, there is a lot of unrest across Europe, and as recession bites, it will grow. Protectionism may not be right, but as UK unemployment rises, and overseas labour is imported, resentment will grow. And to the unemployed, 'best value' becomes 'cheap labour'. All good stuff for BNP recruitment.
Contrast this with the Bankers who caused this mess, being bailed out by Government with no conditions attached, many still getting vast bonusses, and Lloyds Directors actually having the cheek to want a pay rise. Not forgetting MP's and Lords getting expenses and bungs. As the recession really takes hold, there will be a lot of resentment, and as the early 80's proved, the British are more than capable of rioting when provoked. The Public can't get at Bankers or MP's, so it is incidents like this that will spark off any unrest.
Let's just hope we don't contract out Parliament to Italy, as Berlosconi makes our lot look positively honest!0 -
