just a quick question!

Options
I'm currently overdrawn and past my overdraft limit due to an unexpectedly expensive phone bill.

Would I be able to use my debit card to buy food until my paycheque comes in, or will the transaction be rejected?

I'm with hsbc and it's a maestro debit card and I'm with hsbc, just incase that's important!

Thanks for the help!

    More than likely be rejected.

You will also have charges applied in about a month to the account for going over the agreed limit.

Small amounts in large chain stores its likely to be accepted due to the whole preathorised agreements some places have. But even if it is accepted you are going to be stuffed on the bank charges.

Banks do not take kindly to you continuing to use your account when you know you are in unauthorised overdraft territory. You risk them withdrawing your overdraft entirely, which they can do at a moment's notice.

I've gone over my overdraft limit quite a few times with HSBC, and no charges have ever been given to me. I'm quite surprised actually.

Tell your bank what is happening, and when you next expect to have money. And of course see if you can get any money from your uni hardship fund.

Continuing to spend the bank's money when you are over your overdraft limit is NOT a good idea.

Probably will accept only way to know is to try. However, as mentioned in this thread, it is not a sensible idea. But if you need food you got to eat. Could always try and borrow off a friend to see if they can help you out till your pay cheque clears.
  • Speak to your bank to see if they will temporarily increase your overdraft (keep it to the bare minimum.) This will reduce charges later. Banks are much more friendly if you keep in touch.
Meanwhile ditch the phone so no more unexpected bills.
