My First rental, local Housing Allowance, a few questions

posted this in the benifits forum but now think this is prob more appropriate.

Basically I am a graduate looking for work and currently claiming JSA, I am looking at relocating to another area and have found a flat which is expensive but once in work will be easily manageable. I have been told by the council that I am entitled to £270 LHA (this will cover just under half my rent) and will be very much needed while I look for work.

I have two main questions, firstly if I do some temping over 16 hours a week I understand I will lose my JSA which I am not to fussed about but would I lose my LHA aswell or do i have to earn 16k for that to happen?

Secondly I can get a better deal if I pay 6 months of the rent upfront (£300 saveing) with a loan from grandparents, this willl also save the hassel of credit checks ect however if I do this will I still be entitled to LHA each month so i can help pay back my grandparents? or do i have to pay monthly to recive LHA.

Cheers guys in advance

If you are looking for work, then you should go into a shared house while you're looking and establishing yourself. Then the LHA would cover the whole rent probably.

If you are temping over 16 hours a week, it would depend at what rate. e.g. £6/hour is £96/week, but if you were temping at £10/hour it'd be £160/week. You can get a feel for it on http://www.entitledto.com

It is a sliding scale between getting LHA and losing it because of income.

    Don't borrow money.

Go into a houseshare for 6 months, find a job, get established, have some new instant friends who can show you about town. That way you're not in debt, signed up for 6 whole months in an over-priced flat in an area you hate and don't know anybody.
