Sofa extended warranty-need advice

I purchased 2 sofas from a well known company in April 2008, at the point of sale I was told by the salesman the covers could not be removed and was promptly advised to take out their 5 year warranty where they would repair or clean any spills etc. Having 2 kids I took this out, however upon delivery we found the covers could be removed and although they advise not too we can wash them easily. However due to one sofa being faulty and taking six months and umpteen phone calls to replace (not part of the warranty i may add) I never cancelled the policy within 14 days of reciept of delivery.
Now with the credit crunch etc and the 12 month interst free option swiftly coming to an end I phoned them to explain I felt mis-sold and do not want the warranty and as I never claimed from it to cancel it. The furniture company basically said tough s**t you took it you pay for it, does anyone know what i can do to get out of this? I'd rather not pay them £180 if i can help it : )

If it was a single premium policy, then it's doubtful you get anything back if you cancel it.
You need to read up in the policy what it says about the effect cancelling has.
If you cannot get any premium refunded if you cancel, then you may as well just keep it running till it expires.0 -
Oh dear, the salesman has had you on this one.If you have home contents insurance with accidental damage cover it would pay out to clean / repair or replace the sofa (Whichever is cheapest). If you did not have accidental damage cover on your contents cover it only costs around 15% extra to include it.
House insurance would not cover "wear and tear"
So their £180 is in my opinion a rip off especially if you did put in a claim they would almost certainly ask your home insurers to pay half the claim anyway (if you had accidental damage)
I would suggest you contact the Office of Fair Trading or Financial Service Authority.
I also recommend you do not buy warranties etc from a shop when you buy the item, just go home and speak to your home insurers as they often cover things the shops are trying to sell you expensive policies for and / or get on the internet and shop around.0 -
Thanks for all the replies, I've actually not paid it yet as its was on a 12 month interest free plan which we have been paying monthly without any problems, all that left is to pay the premium, i've written a letter saying I cancelled it but thay have not yet applied the credit so we will see what happens, will post the answer when i know....cheers again!0
