Using Windows Mail

Right, I have had it up to here with my unreliable webmail provider(s). I'm mentioning no names. I want to start using Windows mail on my PC - I'm using Vista. Firstly - any opinions on Windows Mail as a program?
I want to create an email address that is me@mychosenname.co.uk or similar for professional purposes and not affiliated to a webmail provider. How do I do this?
I am also hoping to set up a website for myself imminently so should I just stick with the one linked to the domain name for this (I have done this before for something else), or would it be better to have something totally separate?
Am I right in thinking that I should use POP3?

Windows Live Mail now replaces 'Mail'. In my opinion, it's not much different to Outlook Express and can be customized as required.
I access GMail, Hotmail and O2 emails from Live mail, in a similar way to using OE. You can also access newsgroups.
Unsure about your other questions but am sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.
Good luck0 -
To get an email address like the one you want you need to purchase a domain name. I use www.easily.co.uk for mine but there are lots of other providers.
I thnik easily charge £8 for a .co.uk domain name for two years.
Once you have a domain name you then use the 'control panel' on easily's website to redirect your email. So you tell everyone your address is me@mychosenname.co.uk then easily re-direct it to petshopgirlemma@yourisp.com (whatever email address your ISP gives you).
I can't advise on Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail as I've never used them. Although I use Vista I like Mozilla Thunderbird as my mail client. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends

Hi,
Firstly I would strongly advise to use Thunderbird over more generic clients such as outlook or mail, this is because (just like using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer) it is more secure, and safer when it comes to using it.
You will need to get hosting, if you use http://byethost.com/ and buy a years worth of hosting, the will give you a free .com/.net or .org domain of your choice for free, and they only charge $38 p/a.
I am a web developer by trade so I know a lot of useful tit bits in this region, so if you need further help feel free to give me a message or poke

Windows mail is great, its simple to use and does the job.
As for the name you will need to buy a domain name.
You will then need to buy hosting and link the name up to the server, this is very simple and your host should help you do this.
I would reccommend one.com or ezpzhosting.co.uk
One.com i think is aimed at the beginner as its got an easier control panel but the other host has a more powerfull control panel.
For the domain name i would reccommend namecheap.com but i beleive one.com offers a free domain name.
I would use IMAP if your provider offers it not POP.
Hope this helps and feel free to PM me or reply if you need any help.

I know your against webmail but is this from experience of your ISP's?
I would recommend using google apps. All you need to pay for is your Domain, less than £7 inc VAT for 2 years and then you will have access to GoogleMail using you domain for the email address, you can set up 500 and more if you ask. You will also be able to use Google Sites which is a colaberation workspace like Sharepoint or a WIKI, plus google docs and a few other things.
I use it and find it very reliable. The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

The OP said they are using Vista. IE in Vista is more secure than Firefox.
The weakest link is ALWAYS the end user.0 -
The real point was too use Thunderbird, instead of items such as mail client (they may work well, but that doesn't make them safe) I highly recommend Byethost, and have used them for several years for their VPN service.
and as a side-note which isn't really related to the topic, IE is far from more secure, but what you said is true. Using either browser is liability if the user doesn't know what they are doing.0 -
I'd recommend tsohost.co.uk for domains and hosting. Hosting for £14.99 a year and .uk domains at £5.99. I use them for a few sites I run.
Also relichost.net for hosting at £6 a year.
Both are run by proper UK Limited companies and not some school boy bedroom reseller.
