Cruise Insurance

I am looking for cruise insurance for one week. This will be the only trip this year. I have read through the articles on this site and got some quotes but bit unsure if you need 'special' cruise insurance or if the single trip policis on the comparison websites would cover cruises. Any thoughts please?? or recommendated cruise insurance companies.

  • I use ordinary european ins for our cruises. It all depends where the ship visits as to which cover you need.

We are calling at ports in Greece and Italy but also Croatia which is a "candidate member" of the EU. Does that mean European insurance will not cover Croatia?

Some policies don't cover cruises and some only for a number of days(15 I have seen with tesco on-line) so check.

You could take the cruiseline policy some are reasonable price.

    Which cruise are you planing?

We have an annual policy for Europe. When we went on our last cruise we checked and we were covered. This was despite calling at some North African ports and the Canaries, which all count as Europe for the purposes of the policy.

We cruise yearly and have been advised special cruise cover is required. We got this relatively cheap on the net. If you read the small print in some basic policies they will only cover a holiday to one destination per holiday so not covering the many ports of a cruise.

  • My husband and I have had several cruises and never any trouble. Until last Nov. We was on the Celebrity Ship Mercury and had to turn back 24 hours to get to the nearest island as the ship had 2 medical emergencys on board. That in itself was fine as I would hope,if it had been us they would have done the same. BUT because of this we was a day late for our return flights home.! Leaving fro San Deigo we had two planes to catch. Airline didnt want to know to change. Got onto our travel isnurance and they just said get tickets home yourself then claim. Ok we couldnt get straight home and had to wait for four days for flights. Therefore needing a hotel as well. Once again phoned insurance kept them up to date. Go ahead they said and fill in claim when you get home. So on return filled in all the forms and got them off. Only to be told by them that we was not covered for Delays on Return Trips.! Only on outgoing ones. so therefore not one penny of the £1100,that we had to pay out in the end, was they going to pay me.!! Nothing.!!
So beware when buying Cruise Insurance and ask about return delays ect. before you pay your money to them.!!

European often covers any country that borders the Med, so Tunisia and Morocco, for example are covered. Always worth checking though
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical
