How can I lesson the strenght of the magnetic catch on bathroom cabinet

I bought and fitted a new cabinet but the magnetic catch is too strong. When opening it shakes the whole cabinet. Any way I can desensitise the strength of the magnet.

  • Could try putting a self adhesive label or foam strip, to provide a slight gap, on the metal plate the magnet sticks to.

The way to get rid of a magnet is to hit it really hard with a hammer. Not an option in your case, so I'd go with the sticky-back foam.

Try some Sellotape on the magnet itself.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • Can you offset the magnet and the steel contact so that there is only a partial overlap?
  • Try putting avery thin, small piece of blu tack on the magnet

  • De-magnatise it with a stronger magnet !
Apply an AC field to it.
    Take magnet out.
Take magnet out and fit different catch
    Cut magnet in half.
Fit a shim of mu-metal to it.

This is what I would try first, before doing any permanent damage to the magnet.

If the metal plate is covered, it will reduce the magnetic pull and strength of the connection but leaves the magnet undamaged so you can try something else if that doesn't give the best results.

Let us know how you get on.
