My father is in hospital with dementia, the bank have stopped withdrawals on his national savings card(link) ,but he is the only name on the card so therefore my mother has no access to there (well/his) account, how do we go about gaining access without going down the legal route.

I'm not an expert but I don't think there's any way round this other than a legal one - you (or your mother) need to get a Power Of Attorney to take charge of your fathers affairs. Even then, you should only be taking money out of the account if it is for the benefit of your father.
If your father didn't have dementia, then the bank might accept an applicaiton from him to make the account a joint one with your mother, but if the dementia is such that your father is classed as being not capable of managing his own affairs then I think the bank would be failing in their legal duty to him as their customer if they allowed anyone else - even his wide or son - access to his account without the correct legal authority.0 -
You can get free advice from your local Citizens Advice Bureau and they can put you in touch with solicitors who specialise in this field.
Even if your father's dementia is mild and you're expecting him home soon, your mother will need to get a Power Of Attorney asap.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -
Sign him up for internet banking, wait til the logon details come in the post, open it up log on, transfer the money to your account, withdraw it.
