I think most people who haven't meter-watched this winter will feel the same way. Our income has dropped in the last couple of years, so I'm very conscious of how much energy we're using and made sure I fixed at the right time. A couple of years ago, I could have easily found myself in your situation - once caught though, you don't get fooled so easy again.

Forget the above, DD is cheaper

My previous post stated that you still get discounts, not that paying quarterly was cheaper. The point was aimed at those who feel frustrated that they are paying 'in advance' for gas/elec by direct debit. The idea of the Direct Debit is, as has been mentioned, to build up credits over the Summer, when less is used, to settle the Winter bill, when more is used, and, if appropriate, to settle any debt balance on the account.
  • I have received two letters from e-on in the past couple of months warning me of plans to hike my direct debits for gas and electricity. They've jumped from £134 per month to £149 and now to £174. This morning I called e-on to say I did not give authority for them to take £174 and within a couple of minutes they backed down. The dd will remain at £149. I reminded them of the billions in credit they were sitting on from raids on customers' accounts. They told me my account had dipped into the red hence the latest increase which they said would be for 3 months only but there was no mention of that in their letter- they said this omission was being sorted, that there was a problem with their system. I reminded them that my account, like others, would have peaks and troughs and asked why they didn't send me money back when I was in credit. They kindly offered to conduct a 'manual review' of my account whilst I hung on the 'phone. Then they found an £80 'credit' and accepted that my account would be back in credit next month. They are writing to confirm that they won't be changing my dd. Don't let them get away with it......
