If the Governement this side of the water continually protect the guilty banks, whilst joe public is punished then I can see it coming over here....0

Surely the French NOT being on strike would be more newsworthy?
Seriously, I do quite admire the fact that they make the effort. Crucially, it seems people there will protest against something they feel is wrong even if it doesn't directly affect them. I cannot imagine the British doing this- the only issues we seem to feel passionate about are reality TV and house prices. They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -
Anybody got any links to any organisations that support rioting etc. I can see there will be some folk with time on their hands, the ones who have worked and payed their way and now have to witness all this cr4p.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left. :rolleyes:0 -
I admire the french for standing up for what they believe in. The are far more involved in social rights than we are, obviously they are not perfect and i dont agree with everything they do or say but if only we could take a leaf out of their book when it came to standing up to our government, social injustice is rife and it is the workers who will suffer most from this reccession/depression. In a country that could easily afford to support its workforce/sick/homeless/hungry/cold they choose to prop up financial institutions with taxpayer money - our money. I'm disgusted and the sooner the people of this country get their head out of the sand the better. I'll quite happily march/protest and revolt.
Good on the French!0 -
good post Pangean !0

I lived in Paris for 5 years and agree very much with what pangean posts. French workers really do stick up for each other and worry about exclusion and social injustice - it's a far more socialist country in that sense. Most often people go on strike not only to protect their salaries/ working conditions but also to ensure future generations of workers can enjoy the same standard of living and to ensure that the rights and benefits that people have fought long and hard for are not abandoned.0

In some senses, the British apathy/reserve - delete according to preference - is a blessing, in that it means we have avoided messy revolutions for centuries, and far-left/right parties have never yet got very far, as we just can't be bothered to get that extreme about politics.
It's a close-run thing, but I think I just slightly prefer living in a country that can't be bothered to get excited about politics to living in one with violent revolutions on a regular basis.
Obviously, there are times when I'd like to, say, throw a pot of paint at Gordon Brown's head or something. But then I get really quite upset when people riot and burn things/smash cars etc. Messing up my nice country. Grr.
Could do with a nice tradition of peaceful protest - a srt of British Velvet Revolution maybe?
Then again, we do have the vote. The Czechs weren't so fortuate.
To the ballot boxes (whenever they get round to holding the election), dear friends!0 -
They really are all the same, I thought the end of the Tory run would show a left leaning - but oh no! we just had Tory's in red clothes (alas the late John Smith). There really is no choice. My two grandads fought in WWII and i vey much appreciate what they fought for, but dont think that that freedom exists now. Just wait and see - nothing will change and nobody will accept responsibility.
I also hate to see public disorder-violence-criminal damage but people really should stand and be counted.
Peaceful protest en-mass is the only way to get our government to really listen.0 -

Can you honestly bellieve the British would ever have the gumption to do it.
Unless it's for something totally trivial like kicking a ball around the British have no passion.
You might get the odd one or two,but that's about it.
Its because no British are left. Most Brits who gave a hoot have left the country for better times and the country is filling up with foreigners who have no apathy for Britishness at all. This is wearing on those of us who are left and we feel nothing to protest about anymore or if we did it we not have any effect. Because our government has worn us down over the last 12 years of their reign slowly eroding our civil liberties.0
