allotment website - cheapest ideas

Our allotment site really could do with a website so we can promote allotments, grow your own and be a central point of communication for the whole of the site.

What would be the cheapest way of doing this.

I have searched the internet and found a few companies that charge £1.99 a month. Would these be any good. Easy to build using templates which seem easy to set up.

I'm with Virgin media and they offer free web space, but ready some of the infom I'm not sure how easy/difficult it would be to set up a website

The idea is to have a couple of pages such as News, photo's, planting guides and general info regarding the sites polices.

Any advice or suggestions would be great.
Kind Regards
Maz

£1.99 seems OK... however - you may be lumbered with spam etc?

Does that just include the free template? Or is that a domain name + hosting too?

I believe it's the domain, and hosting and the use of templates to build the site.

This part in the T&C concerns me -Traffic restrictions & rules: the Customer receives an automatic notification by email upon having reached the limit of agreed-upon traffic volumes. Beginning with this notification, the traffic will be charged monthly afterwards in the same way as the subscription fees, according to the product tariff. If the Customer reaches the general traffic limit, his website connection will be suspended until the beginning of the next month. The product PURE is unlimited; thus, no traffic tariff applies

for the £1.99 it states 5GB Transfer per month

https://www.1234.info have some brilliant templates for free, if you're willing to do the work of manipulating them yourself. Notepad++ is really a lifesaver when it comes to HTML editing.

    What about Google Sites? http://www.google.com/sites/help/intl/en/overview.html

It's free and you should be able to do what you want.

I'd go with Bill's recommendation and try Google Sites.

I must admit I only came across Google Sites recently and statred playing around with a site for our lottery syndicate at work as a test.

It seems pretty decent if you just want a basic site and it's very easy to link in things from Google Docs, Google Calendar etc.

A wordpress blog sounds like a good idea for this; updates and photos as the growing year progressed would be great, and very easy to add in a blog, and you could easily add extra pages in wordpress for promoting allotments in general, and anything else you need on there.
