Personal Contents Insurance (ie Camera & laptop)

Hi there,
I am trying to get insurance on my expensive camera equipment and laptop computer and finding it really hard work.
Can anyone recommend someone or something? I live in a rented flat, owned by my flatmate and we are apparently covered within the flat by his insurance, but I need my stuff covered when I'm out and about in the event of my stuff being stolen or damaged. Can anyone help, as the insurers on moneysupermarket won't cover me.
Would be very grateful

Endsleigh Insurance may be worth a try. Because they originated from covering students they may have something suitable. I used to work for them but that was a long time ago. Other than them what you need to ask for is "personal possesions away from the home"

It sounds like you are looking for an "all risks" policy on some specified items, there are many brokers out there which will cater for your needs.
(Understand that "all risks" is a term used to describe a wide cover availible for such items, and it won't actualy cover you for absolutly anything. E.G. policies typlicaly exclude wear and tear or mechanical or electrical breakdown)
Have you tried googling photographic insurance? http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=photographic+insurance&meta=
The top few results all look like they should be able to help you. Give a few of them a call to discuss your needs. Most will offer cover for amatures that covers only equipment for a menu of different senarios/circumstances. They will also offer cover that includes some liability cover etc.
Alternativly, call your friends household insurer covering the contents at the moment and ask them to quote for adding personal posessions cover sufficient to cover the items you want to insure. They will likely be able to add this cover as a mid term adjustment.0 -
The cheapest and best way to cover these items is for you to add yourself as a "Joint Policy Holder" onto your friends home insurance. They are unlikey to charge you to do this (Unless you are younger than him/her). Your contens would then be covered and if they do not already have an extension on their policy to cover "Specified Personal Possessions" or "Unspecified Personal Possessions" you can simply add them for around £30 a year.
What you should note is that your contents is not covered by your flat mates home Insurers unless you are a "Joint Policy Holder" (Unless you are a partner of their children) So currently your contents will not be covered so you would be best to add yourself anyway and get your cameras etc covered on their policy. (If you don't believe me on this get your flat mate to ring and ask their Insurers if their flat mate who is not a joint policy holders contents are cover).

Thanks for this, all excellent advice. I have managed to get a good quote from E&L (£71) covering the camera equipent.
Will look into the joint policy issue...0 -
Try HSBC posessions policy-they cover your contents while living in shared accommodation (ie rented property with unrelated tenents, like you and your friend).
This will insure your contents aswell though. But it means you get personal possessions cover for your camera and there is computer equipment cover also for your laptop.
Single item limits do apply though so you might need to look at that.0 -
I would not have recommended E&L as they have a reputation...0
