If they are planning their wedding they are already engaged. The OP might not have a ring, they might not have marked the occassion, but from the day they decided to get married they were engaged.

This 'getting engaged' on a certain day seems to have stemmed from my generation onwards it was alien to my parents and grandparents.

I don't quite understand why you can't wait until after his training? What is the rush? I may be missing a vital point here, but in my mind, you only get married once. Perhaps I'm just old fashioned? Why don't you just get engaged, have a small engagement party for close friends/family (needn't be expensive, you can do it the MSE way). Then you have plenty of time to build up to your 'big day' properly.

That's how I'd do it anyway. To me the most important part of a wedding day is when you exchange your vows, and you are pronounced man & wife. Somehow, I can't imagine doing that more than once, and it feeling as special both times, but like I say, that's just for me.
One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing

Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home
  • I'm having my engagement ring made at the moment, can't help with costs as its a friend of a friend making it at cost price, but one thing that I found out that's really interesting is that the price of gold is really high at the moment and the cost of platinum is really low so the price difference is small at the moment. For my ring I think it was £60 more for platinum than it would have been for white gold. Obviously the price in the shops is still vastly different as they probably bought their stock before the price drops, so if you get one made you will probably get a better deal on platinum than if you buy 'off the peg'. From what I've heard, platinum is considerably harder wearing than white gold. With a white gold ring you will have to get it re-plated regularly to keep it looking good, at a cost of around £20 and sending it away for a week or so. When I wear silver rings they get discoloured and weak very quickly at the back so I was told I would probably have to get a white gold ring replated every 4-6 months. I think it depends on your acidity or something! Anyway, long ramble but worth looking into.

I've never heard that before but I suppose it is possible, but certainly nothing like that frequently! I have a white gold engagement ring and a platinum wedding band. I have worn the engagement ring for over 12 years with no noticeable change in the ring, colour or need for replating. However, I suppose it would depend on the original ring quality.

Difficult to explain, we've discussed getting married and he's said he wants to marry me in May "for my birthday" though I'd rather just be engaged by then now... So he has asked me to marry him, just not proposed. It's a very complicated situation if you're not, sort of, personally involved. ;)

We've been wanting to get engaged for a while, only OH wanted to wait until he could afford a decent ring and do it 'properly' and he wants to get married shortly after. So tbh, the whole RAF thing is just fast-tracking something which would have been put off for no specific reason really.. Now, we just want to do it and be married. :)

Was wondering when I'd come across someone from t'other site. :)

My mum has a white gold ring which has started to tarnish, don't think she's had it re-plated, you can just see that, where it's been rubbing, it's a slightly different colour. Personally I wouldn't mind white gold, I think I'd prefer to have a look in the shops, so I could see the difference in colour/shininess though as I quite like Platinum too.

Pretty much (in an attempt to clarify) we're planning to get engaged (with a ring) before we get married, but the wedding would be just a personal, small ceremony...then later on we'd like to have a bigger do, invite loads of people and celebrate our marriage that way. Maybe get a blessing/do renewal of vows, but pretty much just have a big celebratory party and splash out, have fun and invite loads of friends/relatives. :)

    Thanks for your replies.

    xx

Well surely you can have a small ceremony and then have a large reception? Even if you had the large reception months later? Not very MSE to have two weddings (I am obsessed with weddings I even had a wedding dress and no boyfriend :O)

To add to that, I only have a wedding dress as I bought it from ebay for £50 and reselling it making £50 profit on top! I was lucky, its a beautiful dress and was never worn

I have never heard of a white gold ring tarnishing, white gold is white gold all the way through and not just plated over gold gold.

Only a plated ring would tarnish like this. Am i wrong MSE ers
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Well what I wanted to do, was get married in a registry office, then go to the beach with a load of friends and have piccies taken and get some fish and chips and just sit on some towels on the beach. :)

It's a few years in the future for the renewal of vows/big party, but that's the general idea. This would be a very personal, private ceremony with a casual 'reception' (fish and chips on the beach is my kind of reception!)...then later on a big party, where we'd splash out and have loads of people and a proper dinner etc. :)

It might not 'tarnish' as such, but rubs and has a normal gold hue to it. I'm pretty sure it's solid and not plated.... I honestly don't know that much about metals in this sense, so probably best to wait and see if anyone knows better than me!!!

The rhodium plating is used to make the white gold look more white. The natural color of white gold is actually a light grey color. The Rhodium is very white and very hard, but it does wear away eventually. To keep a white gold ring looking its best it should be re-rhodium plated approximately each 12 to 18 months. Most local jewellers are able to rhodium plate jewellery for a cost effective price.
