If you dont have a backup you will need to send it to a specialist data receovery company. Dont keep trying to access or power up disk as this will just cause more damage and make it more unlikely they can recover the data.

What do you mean by 'its crashed'? We might be able to help you recover the information if it hasn't completely corrupted.

Professional services to recover data can be very pricey so I would use that as a last ditch effort. And only if the info you have on the HDD is worth £500+ to you.

It depends how you mean "crashed" to be honest.

If you can expand, we will be able to offer better advice.

  • run getdataback, its a little prog that you can use to recover data. You will need to ensure you do not save data to the drive and connect it as a slave drive to an existing system. It will take a few hours to do it depending on the size of the drive but I have used it a few times. Hopefully your drive will still run up.

When you have done this remember in future to back it up!! Another tip is to wrap the drive in a bag and put it in the freezer. after a few hours it will be really cold and the drive platters may kick in giving you time to access the data, if so save them as quickly as possible to another drive.
  • You must purchase and d/l SpinRite from Steve Gibson a hard drive maintenance and recovery utility. It does indeed work very well. Money backed g'tee. See the web site listen to the video and join the Security Now! podcast. All at https://www.grc.com

    +1 for GetDataBack
I've used it many times to recover clients Data from formated / crashed drives.

Also for ANY data recovery to be successful you have to use the drive as little as possible.

I have used the program to get data back when a client decided to format and reinstall Windows without backing up their Accounts program!! Lucklly they had not used much of the drive and I was able to get all their Account data back!!
