A 'pocket-sized' e-mail receiver

In view of common-place 'free internet connection' in more and more hotels and also wi-fi areas in airports and elsewhere, can anyone recommend an inexpensive 'pocket sized' (rather than a bulky lap-top size) unit that can take advantage of these services so I can collect (and send) my e-mails whilst away from home. I have a tri-band mobile with camera so those not necessary attachments. Prepared to buy a seperate 'travelling keyboard' to accompany such a unit if necessary.
