I have a feeling this is an incredibly silly question!!

But i am unsure so i am going to go ahead anyway!! Go easy on me please.
I have a Cap one CC with a £200 credit limit, my mum wants to book an overseas trip and has asked if she can use my cc (she will top it up by the amount she needs for the ticket. Can i put in more than the £200 (that my limit is) into the card and if so will the whole £500 that i will be puting in be protected?
Thank you in advance!
Lauren

Personally, I wouldn't risk putting a credit card in credit. Credit cards - other than Egg Money - are not designed to carry a positive balance.

Small amounts that arise temporarily (due to a refund, for instance) are okay, but the Ts & Cs usually prohibit payments that deliberately place the account in credit.

P.S. you cannot generally spend more than your entire credit limit in one day regardless of what your actual balance is (exceptions to this would be lots of transactions under floor limit and delayed transactions from abroad).

You can't do it as the credit limit on the card is the maximum that can be spent all at once, even if you did pre-load your card.

  • That makes sense thank you! I also thought even if i was able to i didn't think they would protect more than they had given me to start with. Thank you again!

You could be right there. One of the reasons they do not permit positive balances may be that the customers money is not insured.

Additionally, section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act probably wouldn't apply if you spent from a positive balance because technically it's not credit.

do remember that the section 75 protection of the credit card apply to the full amount of the holiday even if you only pay a deposit by credit card

£100 on the CapOne will cover the entire amount of the holiday, even if you pay the rest by cash.
I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another, so please feel free to ignore this.
  • So just for clarification, if i pay £100 towards the holiday from my Cap 1 card and the rest from my debit card then the full amount of the holiday will be covered? Thank you again! (Glad i asked the question now!)

Assuming the holiday is an all-in package, yes. If the supplier will let you make a part-payment on the card, of course.
