ive been asked to have a look at a friends laptop. it is a compaq presario f500. when the laptop is turned on i have to wait a few minutes, then get the windows msg configuring update 3 of 3 0%. then after a minute it auto restarts and i get the same msg again. i was told to press f8 and safe mode, when i did this it got to windows then shut down again. straight away. any help would be great as a mate needs to get into the pc to get his college stuff from it asap.

you need to boot from a windows disk and do a "repair console" repair on the drive using chkdsk /r command, this could be a long job!click here to achieve nothing!0

If you press f8 you should see the option to turn off "Reboot on error" or something like that. Select that and reboot. You should see a Blue screen error message.
Post the string of numbers here; Should be something like :
0x00000000: 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000
<some_sort_of_error_message_goes_here>
Or stick it into google and it will tell you roughly what's wrong..
