Is this bill right??

Hi,
My first post here... in desperation after receiving our latest bills!

3 bed semi detached. Me my wife and baby. Usual mod cons including tumble dryer, gas cooker, gas fire (used rarely), A new A Rated condenser boiler.

Our quarterly bill (Nov, Dec, Jan) came to Gas £471!!! and Electric £222

This seems stupidly high. We are with Southern Electric for both.

Now I've checked the meter and it's an imperial one masured in ft3. They appear to have done the calculation correctly to convert on the bill.

Now how do I know if the meter is not running fast? Or could the problem lie with the whole Imperial vs Metric issue? Is it possible that the meter was converted to metric but the front face of the meter still says feet?

As a fellow Southern Electric customer I have found them (currently) to be one of the most expensive companies, the last few months we have been spending at approx £80 per month on electric, and are not running electric heaters, just standard day to day house costs tv, pc etc. I bought a Owl monitor as I was concerned the meter may be at fault it did seem ok. So the electricity costs may be about right.

Your gas bill does seem high though but bear in mind that the last few months are when you use it most and the drops a lot in the milder months.

This seems high to me but I guess with a young baby perhaps your gas has been on throughout the day, more use of tumble dryer etc etc.
If it helps I live in a three bed semi with 2 teenage daughters, gas heating and cooking but no tumble dryer. We are out during the day so heating off but laptops, TVs, lights on in every room most evenings. I'm with Scottish Power paperless billing and my last quarter was £149.00 electric and £100 gas.
I don't know how well your house is insulated but perhaps ask your neighbours if they've received abnormally high bills. Check their consumption with yours as they probably have an older meter like yours, and also perhaps compare kwh over 24 hours.
    Good luck.

my last quarter was around what you are quoting. however, my current bill which has just arrived is quoting more like the OP.

I think £400 seems to be the going rate for an average sized family home using Gas this winter, having spoken to alot of friends/family

Ive just had an e-bill from eon. They want to put my DD upto £166 a month! Yes Im all electric (non E7). I have just been down to see the meter and believe it or not after giving them a meter reading yesterday I have used 50 units in 24 hours!

I am guilty I think. I have a 2Kw convection heater in the kitchen which I put on frost protection when I goto bed (as I do with all my convection heaters). Im sure I have come down in the morning and heard it click on and off and its not been that cold in the house! Needless to say I have switched it off at the wall and taken a meter reading, will see what the reading is like tomorrow same time.

It has to be a faulty thermostat on a heater, 50 units in 24 hours is one hell of a lot, even for me. I usually get though about 10 units a day in the winter!

Ok - you've all been scaring me so I just went outside to read my meters.
Over the last 9 weeks I have used £68.00 of electricity and £86.00 of gas so by my calculations this should work out to be £98.00 for electricity and £156.00 for gas for the quarter. Hope I'm right!
