day / night rates

Hi, I use Scottish power for gas and electricity but realised I dont need to be on the
day/night rate for electricity as I dont have economy 7/ storage heaters.
I have checked my usage over the past few days and the results are;
DAY 3.06 units at 16.634 pence
NIGHT 5.7 units at 5.923 pence
This is my average usage per day
Even though I usually stay up until 2am I`m surprised my night usage is nearly double the
day usage ( does the meter speed up at night ? )
I phoned Scottish power today but they said to change to a single tarrif would need a meter
change and would cost £ 51.
Would it be worthwhile to change tarrifs, how long before the £ 51 is recouped ? or would
changing suppliers be a better option ( would I still need a meter change ) or should I just
leave things as they are? thanks John

Hello again,I just thought I`d check which meter is moving and was surprised to see the night one running at 7.15 pm ( my night tarrif is 11pm to 7am )

Needless to say I will be ringing them tomorrow, what can I expect in way of a refund, I have been with them for well over 2 years. John

A negative refund. You owe them money!

That explains your puzzling useage in the first post.
  • Yeah!!! Night rate is much much cheaper then day so its a good thing its higher!

  • I'd keep quiet about it if I were you.

Although you might want to consider swapping to another supplier. Your tariff seems on the expensive side.

Check carefully the SP tariff before you decide to switch away from E7, as in some areas it's cheaper to be on E7 with them whatever your usage!

    Hi,

I'd do a simple test to check that your day and night rates are being billed the correct way round, as this will be corrected at some point. Especilay if you do decide to change supplier.

You can do this test by taking a meter reading in the morning around 10am, then boil the kettle and turn on some electric appliances, then take a second set of readings around an hour later.

The rate that has moved is your day rate and the reading that has not moved is the night reading.

Check these readings against your bills, if they are the wrong way round contact your supplier and have your account re-billed.

Some suppliers do not need to arrange a meter exchange if you want to be taken off the economy 7, they can change your billing to one rate but leave the same meter in your property.

This is something to ask when looking to change.
