Jobseekers Allowance

I am in a similar situation in that I have recently been made redundant, recieved payment in lieu of notice and a lump sum payment so I have spent a couple of months circulating the merry-go-round of the JobCentre.
If you have received a payment in lieu of notice you are not entitled to JSA for those weeks but there is a form you can complete to get your National Insurance Contributions paid for that period of time. You need to show them the letter you received from your employer detailing the number of weeks your lieu of notice payment covered - this form is available from the JobCentre but not all the staff there seem to know about it. It's just a single sheet of A4 that looks as if it was typed many years ago and has been photocopied trillions of times!!
You will only be entitled to claim contribution based JSA for six months so don't sign on for the period of time covered by the lieu of notice because you only get to sign on for six months regardless of whether you are receiving benefit for the whole of those six months. Thus if you sign on straight away and have eight weeks lieu of notice period then you only receive pound notes for 18 weeks - the first 8 weeks you just sign on for nothing.
One other thing to bear in mind is if you are receiving an occupational or private pension your JSA will be reduced penny for penny on any amount of pension over £50 per week.
I would definitely investigate the carer's allowance at some point because although not quite as much money as JSA it will pay your NIC and you may still qualify for that if you are on a pension?
Hope some of that made sense.
Good Luck
Hi, looking for information on JSA and signing on. I've just been made redundant and my finishing date has passed but they have paid me in lieu of notice (PILON) for 8 weeks. I called JSA and they said that I can't claim or sign on until first day I'm free to work, after the 8 weeks. However, I am technically free to work now as my end date of service with the company was when they finalised my redundancy and PILON payments. If I can't claim for 8 weeks re PILON that's fine, but I need to know my NI is being paid for the 8 weeks as PILON was tax and NI free.
Is the information quoted still correct?
Thanks,0 -

No the information is out of date. You should claim straight away as there is no longer a disqualification period for pay in lieu of notice.0
