I think the trouble is that a lot of employers are tightening up on sick claims as well, even just lots of odd days, and as you say it's no help to the OP because the employer will know about the child having been in hospital by now.krisskross wrote:i know this isn't the answer or any solution to the OP but I worked for a lot of non child friendly employers and just used to say I was sick.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I know I was lucky, when my children were ill my mum, who was my childminder looked after them, I never lost a day's work through my children being ill. I have worked with parents who weren't so lucky and it is a massive problem, most nurseries etc won't take an ill child, even if it's just a cold that they probably picked up there, and emploers and colleagues get cheesed off with staff who take time off with ill children.
I hope you daughter is well soon and that you find a satisfactory solution to the problem.0 -
The official line is that employees are legally entitled to time off to care for dependants, but they should not expect to be paid for it.
Therefore, your wife's work are actually being quite generous by allowing the first week to be taken as holiday. Legally, both weeks could be classed as unpaid leave.
It really depends on the employer. If her time is worth a lot they may want her to take it all as holiday so that she doesn't have any more time off later in the year. However if the employers cash is worth more to them then they may rather your wife stays home but doesn't get paid. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Its only free because you've paid for it.
Noone can have everything they want and the sooner you learn that the better.
