Also, you could learn some basic music reading. It really is easy once you know how. Have a look here.

You can get a series of books which are sheet music with the notes in the usual way, but they also have the names written in the music. I can't remember what they were called, though, although they might have been "it's easy to play..."

They had black covers and were about exercise book size. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?!

Here you go - I'm writing these out without playing them on a keyboard so shout if they don't sound right. They should be right though. No black notes needed at all! Row the boat is the easiest to learn, then baa baa black sheep and the harder one is 1 2 3 4 5.

    Baa baa black sheep

CC GG ABCA G ..........................baa baa black sheep have you any wool
FF EE DD C ..................................yes sir yes sir 3 bags full
G GG F FF E EE D D ...................one for the master and one for the dame
G GG FGAF E DD C ....................one for the little boy who lives down the lane

    12345, Once i caught a fish alive

    E E D C C ............................1 2 3 4 5
    G C E G G F F .....................once I caught a fish alive
    F FF E D D ...........................6 7 8 9 10
    C B A B D C C .....................then I let it go again
    E E E D C C .........................why did you let it go
    C G C E G G F F ..................because it bit my finger so
F FF E D D ...........................which finger did it bite
    C B A B D C C .....................this little finger on my right

(you use two 'G's in this - use common sense to work out which one it is, the one below middle C or the one above. You'll hear which one it should be when you play the tune.)

    row your boat

    C C C D E ......................row row row your boat
    E D E F G .......................gently down the stream
CCC GGG EEE CCC......merrily merrily merrily merrily
    G F E D C ...................... life is but a dream

Use the high C for the first 'merrily' and the low one for the last 'merrily'.

    Also any tv show songs.

I don't know very many of these - tell me which ones and I'll listen to the tune next time it is on. CBeebies is on fairly often here but I block it out when possible!

Its good for her to learn to play some fun songs she recognises without bothering to learn to read music first, I think. That way, she'll get the thrill and excitement, and the pride of being able to show her friends and family what she can do, without the longer process of having to learn notes, values etc. She's only 3 after all! The reading music can come later - get her hooked on the fun of it all first :)

After lots and lots of random googling, I have found the books!

The first one is SFX keyboard book 1 although they don't really have to come in any order. They've all got big music with the notes inside. They do different ones, so you could get a book of nursery rhymes or Christmas songs or whatever

  • Hi, how wonderful to hear such a youngster already getting to grips with music and rhythm!

I would highly recommend when moving onto reading music. The John Thompsons Easiest Piano Course. It is really straight forward and is very thorough. I started with these, and after a 12 year break I plan to start teaching!

Why not make it even more fun with some other percussion instruments and play along with her!

Best wishes. Music really is a beautiful thing!
