Moving to Edinburgh from Cornwall, help pls!

Hi - I hope it's OK to post this here!

I'm planning to move to Edinburgh and live in Cornwall. I'm looking for the best way to move my things to the new place.

I won't be bringing anything big like a wardrobe but will most likely be bringing my PC.

Basically it's not enough stuff to hire a company like Pickfords but too much to bring on my own in a car. So I'm not sure what methods I should look at! Does anyone have any experience and can offer advice?

I'm on a very tight budget so cheapest is best, so I would consider an option that may take a couple of weeks.

Thanks!

I should think that your best bet would be to hire a transit van or luton van from a rental company that allows one-way rentals. A lot of rental companies won't allow one-way rentals over that kind of distance, but one or two specialise in it, e.g: http://www.practical.co.uk/onewayrent.asp. Don't know what the costs would be (no doubt higher than a regular rental), but they do have franchises in Cornwall and Edinburgh.

Could you do it in 2 trips? If a PC is the biggest thing you are worried about moving.

Buy a second hand trailer and sell it when up north?

A 2 way trip is going to cost you about £125 in fuel (1000miles, at 35 mpg, at £1 a litre)

Borrow or hire a van? Thats what I did when I moved from London to NI, was dear enough but cheapest option for me. I did have some big stuff though.
    1% at a time no. 40. £8000 (For dream family holiday) 94/100
    MFW 2013 no. 62 £10,000/£10,000
    MFW 2014 no 62 £8000/£7000

Some of the bigger removal firms will take part loads. The downside is that you have to be flexible on dates as they only do the move when the load is full.

Try British Rail or whatever its called now. They will have freight trains on the route. May work out cheaper.

Problem is I haven't had my license for long enough to hire a transit van!

I thought that was the best option and was happy with the 1car1 quote but that's only if I can get someone to drive for me!
I will compare with Practical Car, thanks..

Haven't looked into trains or post yet but expected it to be expensive and possibly not careful enough with some of my stuff. But will look into it and compare.

I've read some threads on some of the bigger removal companies, and seemed to often see that some people had things go missing, etc. I looked at a couple and they seemed a little expensive but will look at more.

I was hoping there'd be something cheap and simple lol

    Thanks for the responses everyone.

Cheapest would be to find a Scottish serviceman going home to Edinburgh take some stuff for you while you take the rest. Bit if a risk but cheap. Depends where you are in Cornwall.

Otherwise trailer sounds next best or a double trip.
