Can I switch with a large debt?

Hi All,
Apologies if this is a common question, but I couldn't find it.
I've been living in my place for 2 1/2 years. A few months ago, I called up my gas company EDF to give them a meter reading, as up until then it had been estimations. They had massively underestimated, gave me a whopping £1000 bill  and told me I could pay it off at £49 a month (which would take forever!). I suppose it's my fault as it's my first place, and I thought my elec bill was covering both at £90 a month.
This has now gone up to £64 and I think I'm on a really uncompetitive tarriff, and want to switch. Can I switch with £800 odd still on my bill or will I have to pay if off first?
Thanks,
Nick
