OR might say can have cheaper car but mine has to go

Hi again guys, sorry for the all the questions.
CCCS have advised that as my car is worth £4500, that an OR would probably have an interest in it even though I use it for work (an absolute essential, not a convenience).
They advised that he may let me have a cheaper car which I honestly don't mind, as long as I have something to get me from A to B it's fine. However does anyone have any personal experience of this? Would I have to wait until the OR has sold my car before he/she gives me an allowance for something cheaper? I'm so worried that I may be without a car for a few weeks until the OR has sold mine and therefore be really stuck work wise. I couldn't afford to hire a car, no way.
Do you think he would be prepared to let me use my car until it is sold or could I suggest to him that I could sell it myself?
I do appreciate that as with anything in BR, cars are a gamble, but would just be interested to see if anyone has any personal experience of this.
Many thanks
Rach
P.S I'm sorry for asking more questions and not answering anyone else's it's just that I'm so new to all of this and wouldn't want to give duff advice!

Really appreciated,

OR will appoint an agent to collect the car and then usually sell the car at auction. You need to look around for a replacement (usually up to £2k) and then the same agent will use the sale proceeds to purchase replacement, with balance being paid over to OR.0

Hi, my car was the same value as yours. I use it for work and to drive my disabled son, I was given the option of a third party buying the car. They had to pay £1725.00, which I think covers the O/R's fees!0

Good luck Rach,
You could always phone and speak to the OR they maybe able to advise. Otherwise enquire about how much it would cost for a third party to buy, like minimad has said. If the car is good then better the devil you know however it depends on what they give you moneywise to buy another car and how much it would cost to buy the existiong one back. see all your options if you can. hope this helps and all the best.0 -
Another option is to sell the car yourself and buy one within the limits and maybe using some for the BR fees and then give what is left to the OR. Unless of course your washing machine broke down

I work in the motor trade and spoke to our salesman today. I told him that the OR uses Parkers Guide and he burst out laughing as the prices quoted are far too high. He said that the true prices are to be found in the CAP book (Current Auction Prices). For example he showed me that my 04 plate Mondeo with 101K on the clock is worth between £1500 and £2000 at auction. So can you appeal against the OR's price? Can you show him the true value?
BTW My ex bought me the car as part of the settlement of my share of the house instead of giving me cash. I do not know where she got it from or if she had a receipt. Even though it registered in my name is the car mine?"What does not kill you makes you stronger"0 -
Hi MercMan
I did suspect that Parkers was higher than auction....is there anywhere online to get a more realistic valuation ?

Take one similar to yours and knock £500 off - that is usually a good indicator of a decent value cars real market value

hi
i was in the same situation.I was a cab driver so obviously needed my car for work.I had a mondeo worth about £4500 and thought i was going to be able to keep it because nothing was mentioned about taking it at the OR interview.Three months later i get a call saying the OR wants the car and they will give me a cheque for £2000 to buy another one when it's sold.'Fair enough' i thought. It took four months before i received the cheque!
The one good thing was that because i wasn't working as i didn't have a car i received early discharge with no IPA before the cheque arrived.I don't know if they made a mistake taking so long to send me my cheque, but i'm not complaining now...0 -
4 months! I hope that's not normal!! I need a car for my job as I am a delivery driver and need to go to various depots that the company own to pick up vehicles. These depots are spread across several counties. I also have to be at work at 5.30 am sometimes.
So can I appeal against the OR price?"What does not kill you makes you stronger"0
