Was going to say, I know we are all suffering with the credit crunch but 7 kids for dinner is a bit excessive :rotfl: :rotfl: what are tiny toads by the way..they sound yum.

    I agree. I love kids but I couldn't eat 7.:D

My budget has gone to pot because we've been ferrying DS4 round the country for university open days and interviews and since we're so far from anywhere we've tended to be out for 13 or 14 hours a day and the sandwiches just haven't lasted :(

I'll update my siggie as soon as I manage to work out what we've spent.

To be fair, it doesnt really help that I am not sure what I am looking for!! :rotfl:

Sainsburys sell Strdrops. Look on bottom shelves with all the other cleaning stuff. They normally have one small tray which is easy to miss.

Thanks trixieB and orchid-96 for advice. I like to have some ready meals that I only need to take out of the freezer and put directly in the oven for the odd day I have not had time to prepare anything (or can't be bothered ). Will look in my local £stretcher (used to be called instore), good it'swithin walking distance, but will also prepare some meat mix only, ready to make up as and when needed.

Am going to sit down tonight with my recipe file and plan next weeks meals... honest!!

on subject of nappies - I used Tesco value ones when my girls were toddlers and they were fine, so it's worth a try. also look on the website of your local council -some will give you a cloth nappy. I know it's only one but if you use it and wash it every other day it will save you a pack of nappies over a month.

I also use Tesco cheap washing powder - but since watching Victorian Farm on tv, I'm only using powder on every other wash. the Victorian programme said that it's the clothes being whooshed round in warm water that gets the dirt out, not the detergent. I also reckon there must be residue of detergent left in the pipes so that's why I'm using it everyother wash. It probably sounds gross but there doesn't seem to be any difference in how clean the clothes come out or how they smell. As you have a 2 year old you'd probably have to use something directly on his clothes to get the stains out though.

all the best with your "challenge" - keep us posted, and as everyone's said, tell us what you have in your cupboards - you'll be amazed how many meals people will suggest using those ingredients.

I have a question about freezing HM meals - how do you freeze lasagna, shepperds pie etc that goes in the oven? Just wondering because I had a good quantity of shepperds pie left over the other day and put it in my pyrex, wrapped cling film round and froze. Had it about a week later but am not really keen on freezing my glassware so any ideas of how to best freeze these things will be greatly appreciated.

I have got into the habit of cooking once and then eating at least twice, or more times. So I freeze a lot of HM ready meals.
Saucey stuff like savory mince, curries and ragu's get put in plastic tupperware/takeaway tubs which are great for stacking in the freezer. and imo you can never have enough of these tubs. I'll defrost first then warm up on the hob.
I stick my sheperd's pies either in a pyrex dish or those tin foil takeaway trays (think I've seen them in £1 shop if you don't get takeaways) and then I'll stick them straight in the oven once defrosted. Lasagne is a tricky one that probably really has to be cooked in the dish that it has been frozen in and a tin foil tray would be great for this, or a pyrex type dish. Pyrex is fine for freezing but obviously it cant be used again whilst it's stuck in freezer so I bought a second dish. I also wrap everything in cling foil.

    HTH, gllt :)
  • Hi everyone - only spent £1.25 today on Milk in Iceland but will be spending more tomorrow as I'm off to Dartford Market to stock up on F&V.

OrkneyStar - you were asking about price for Free Range Eggs, Asda are doing 15 Medium Free Range for £2 at the moment but I think I remember you saying you don't have an Asda, the local Butchers are 6 for £1.25 so I don't think you paid too much over the odds, especially as you were able to buy locally and not use the car.:D

Dinner tonight is a Ham & Mushroom Pasta Bake and for Pudding I'm trying this. Just hope it works as I've just used the last of the Coconut we had in to make it.:p (Note to self to write this on shopping list.) I hate running out of things and have to replace them straight away or I feel uneasy.

    Have a good evening everyone.;)
