Economy 7

Having seen Watchdog earlier in the week and the piece about economy 7 meter readings being taken incorrectly and people getting charged the wrong way round, I decided to check my meter.

Basically since I moved into my house in 2002, I reckon they've been charging me the day rate for my night usage and vice versa. I've recently switched cos my bills were escalating.

Anyone got any ideas on how to go about getting my money back? What are the odds a letter would just get ignored?

do you have evidential prrof that they screwed up? You bill should tell you, I know ours detailed it all quite well (NPower). If not, I think they'll just shrug.
  • All you need do is check at certain times of the day which meter reading is increasing, ie say at 12 noon the day rate should go up.Then look on the bill to see which rate they think it is. They will certainly need more evidence than " I reckon".
Do you have storage heaters? If not then you will have used more daytime electric than night so this possible mistake will have benefited you.

Right, I've checked and they're saying Rate 2 is my night rate. I had a look at 4 in the afternoon and rate 2 was ticking over, so I'm positive they're wrong.

We have storage heaters and I work, so I definately use more electricity at night, so there's no way I've benefited from this.

What sort of meter have you got, the one that switches rates by a radio signal, or one controlled by a mechanical timeswitch. If the latter make sure it is registering the correct time, I believe they can get wrong and if so then your night period could be shifted somewhat.

Just to report back, Eon have re-calculated my bills back to when my meter was installed and I now have a £1300 credit on my account, which I will be getting refunded.

Am really chuffed to get the money back and it'll mean my bills will be lower in future as I'll make sure they're read correctly!
