Direct Line Home Insurance

Sorry, new to the site so not sure if this has ben covered before.
If you insure your home with Direct LIne and think your renewal premium is extortionate it probably is! Ring them up and tell them you are cancelling. I was offered a 40% discount.
Best quote I received was from Co-operative (CIS). Very competitive.
Now the complaint I have. On the comparison sites almost half the companies decline to quote if you've had a couple of claims in the past two years. I had one building and one contents claim 2 years ago but in the previous 33 years I had no more than 5 claims. Why does recent misfortune (the whole principle of insurance is the many contribute to the misfortune of the few) determine risk, rather than whole history?
I hope this is helpful for someone.

The comparison sites and online insurer quote engines are there to cherry pick the standard risks. That is all they are geared up for.
If you are a non standard proposition then you need to phone them or go via an insurance broker.
Last 5 yrs claims history is the norm. The underwriters are looking at frequency of claims more than anything. It would be unreasonable to expect people to provide a history beyond 5 years.0 -
My renewal with them was extortionate but as a new customer the year before I got free or half price contents which is why it was more competitive. They didn't even try to reduce it to keep my custom (no claims since 1998 and one only).
As for instances of claiming, well if you had a claim in 1999 say and none since would you be happy if they took that into consideration? It has to work both way arounds I guess.0
