Halifax Sharebuilder

Options
Hi there id first of all like to say hello to you all as this is all new to me.

Im thinking of getting involved in shares and im a total newbie, ive read some of the threads and are lost with vast amounts of information.

I am looking at investing about £50 a month at the moment (as all my other money is going into paying my wedding) looking to increase it when possible. I looked at the halifax sharebuilder which looked quite good for my needs as investing monthly trying to get a few shares. Anybody used this system before? At the moment havenet a clue what shares to buy etc is there anygood websites with tip etc?

All help you can offer would be great.

Chears inadvance

Matt.

  • You are likely better off investing in funds rather than shares directly, as you get much better diversification.
  • Thanks for the info,

What do you funds rather than shares
  • I have a Halifax Sharebuilder account. I like it! They charge you £1.50 per purchase. So if you buy £50 in one company you will be charged £1.50, if you buy £25 in one and £25 in another you will be charged £3. The disadvantage is that share purchases can only be made on certain dates in the month. So if you see a hot ticket that you want to buy straightaway the sharebuilder wouldn't work for you. However you could then buy through the Halifax ShareDEALING account which would charge you £12.95 per purchase. (If you open a sharebuilder you are automatically given a sharedealer). I think its a good cheap account if you want to drip feed money into shares.
  • Cheers Jaynes for that info, defo going to look into this in more detail tonight, like i say im all new to this just want to start a small collection going. Havent a clue in what shares to by though.

I built up a quite juicy portfolio through Sharebuilder a few years ago. Despite Marconi and MyTravel losing most of their value, I made significant sums in Manchester United and Egg amongst others and found it a fun way to own shares - as well as making a total 30% profit over 2 years.

I funded it with my expenses claims and occasional overtime.

There may be better or more tax efficient ways to invest, but it certainly feels like you have more control and as such will get more pleasure from it.

    Good luck.
