Sold a car to someone in Ireland

Hi Everyone,

I hope someone can help me urgently. We've sold a car to someone in the Republic of Ireland and I sent to V5 to the DVLA. I am under the impression that this is the correct thing to do. As it turns out he is a Motortrader and is kicking off as he wants the whole V5. A colleuge is pestering me to get it back from the DVLA but I don't think we should. Can anyone give me a link to the correct process as I would like some proof to show them that I did the right thing.

Thanks

If he said he was a motor trader up front you should have sent off the motor trader part to the DVLA, its the yellow section

    Selling to a motor trader

If you transfer your vehicle to a motor trader (see note*), and you're in possession of a registration certificate (V5C) you should tell the DVLA of the sale using the V5C/3 section (yellow) and pass the rest to the trader.

I wasn't personally made aware that he was a Motortrader. I haven't had the paperwork from the salesman yet so I'm waiting for that to come up to me to see what it says.

Also, If I got the DVLA to return it would they send it to us or the registered keeper. (We've sold it for a leasing company)

  • DVLA would send it to the reg'd keeper. Unless the leasing company in question declared it as "passed to trade" in which case it'd come back to you in the end.

The person you sold it to should have made it very clear from the start that they were a dealer and therefor wanted the whole doc. If it was sold to NI then you did the right thing sending it in to DVLA. However if it was the rest of Ireland then you'd need to fill in the (purple?) section which is the export section.

PS why do you want this thread deleting?
  • If you sell a vehicle to someone outside of the Great Britain Licensing authority (except NI, as rules changed at beginning of year) then you should give them the whole V5C/logbook. You then need to write to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR to notify of the sale and state that you have sold vehicle to Mr... on ...date, who has exported it to....country.

The new buyer sends Section 11 off to notify of export when the vehicle leaves the country and uses the rest of the V5C/logbook to re-register in the country they are taking it to.

In your case, if you have sent the V5C to DVLA Swansea with the buyer's Irish address on it then the application will be rejected to the new buyer within 4weeks stating that the address is outside of the licensing authority and cannot be processed. They then use this to register the vehcicle in Ireland.

It was sold to someone in the republic of ireland but we weren't exprting it ourselves. They were doing it. I called the DVLA nd they said I should have given him the whole doc. I don't really like that idea though as if we get fines the dvla will say we haven't notified them.

BTW, I didn't want anyone googling after the debate in work yesterday and finding this thread.
