buying goods in thailand

Options
electrical good i mean, not the other sort :D
Off to thailand in may and want to get decent dvd camcorder, digital camera etc is it best to buy before i go or whilst out there? I know most stuff out there is fake (clothing watches etc) but what about electrical goods? Will a Sony be a Sony? I would of thought so as a lot of the stuff is manufacturered out there but just wanted to check as my mate says everything is dirt cheap

Many household names do not offer international warranties. My Olympus camera (bought in UAE) would not be supported by Olympus Europe. My Compaq laptop was supported in UK. Do your research before you go. Perhaps buying in 'Duty-Free on the way out is safer, but check with Dixons that you have a UK warranty.

Duty free may be safer but not cheap. I found that you can get most stuff on the internet in the UK for the same price as thailand.

Yes there are Sony fake CD players, as well as fake gameboys and fake women.

Main electronics area in Bangkok is called Pantip Plaza. However as others have pointed out check the warranty situation.

Prices are probably a bit cheaper than UK, however you would probably be better off buying in the UK just for the warranty side of things.

I bought some unbelievably cheap items when I went there and they are all in full working order. It depends what you want or what you want to do with them. If it's for your own use I would go for it but I would never buy these things to sell on like on ebay. Too risky.

  • I too would be very wary of lack of UK warrantee. Instead shop around online in the UK. At shops like Richer Sounds, for example, you can save up to 80% on some gear. There's a roundup of places worth trying here:

  • Pin is right -- Pantip Plaza is absolutely THE place to go to pick up your electrical bargains.
