Need help with my reclaim with hbos

Hi I was made redundant in september 08' currently in financial difficulty owing creditors money ie loans, credit cards etc been charged by the bank for bounced payments etc (direct debits) informed bank of my hardship but did not care. Under the FSA if some one is in hardship bank have to review case. I called my bank Halifax stated that I would like to reclaim my charges for last 6 yrs due to my hardship they told me to write in stating that I want to reclaim and also to send them a 10.00 cheque.
Is this the correct method for doing this?

Only if you need to find out all the charges. If you already have your statements, you don't need to do this.they told me to write in stating that I want to reclaim and also to send them a 10.00 cheque.
