Hi all,
Our little monkey will be 1 next month. I have told a few parents that it will be for 1 and half hours. Is that enough? Also we went to a party in December and the mum bought a cake from the bakery in the figure 1 at a cost of £30! I cannot afford to spend that much on a cake. What else can I do instead? I thought about making a two layered vanilla/chocolate cake but have no idea how to decorate it. Also what about party bags? The party is during the morning and I will have a few snacks etc for the mum's and some rice cakes, organix carrot sticks and sweetcorn rings for the babies. We have carpets and don't want to give them bananas etc as this will most likely get mashed into the carpet.
We don't have a home bargains near us but I was wondering if anyone had seen anything in store that would be appropriate to give a bunch of 1 years olds as an alternative to bits for party bags.... which I have no clue what to put it.
Any snack ideas, games, cake thought and party gifts for those that come would be very, very helpful.
Thanks as always.
BB

Hi All,
You can get cheap party cakes from Asda or Tesco. Not sure if it'll be a number 1 shape, but you can get character ones or just ones with balloons on for around about £8 for quite a big one!
Plenty for all the adults to enjoy!

Skinless sausages, cucumber sticks, grapes, melon, apple, raisins and crackers or goodies crisps are all good for the babies.
You wont need party games. Just let the kids play with each other and toys, enjoy and relax!
Party bags - you dont really need but if you really want them include, bottle of bubbles, chunky crayons, board books, box of raisins, little toy car or animal (plastic one - think asda do 3 for £2)

We did pass the parcel last year at my LO's 1st birthday - it was good as every LO had a big brother or sister to do it with. Each layer I did a "big" sweet & a "little" sweet & the final layer had something for both age groups (all older siblings were about 3 1/2).
We put a big plastic mat on the floor for a picnic & all the children sat really well. We had sausage, sausage roll, mini pizza (which mine helped me make), smiley potato faces grapes, raisins, crisps, bikkies - don't forget they are 1 & they will be eating proper food!
I did party bags & simply looked around asda for some bargains in the weeks leading up to the party. You can usually get nice cheap books etc.
We have her 2nd birthday coming up in 6 weeks & I am getting really excited. We are going to go for a Peppa pig theme - as she always wants to have Peppa on when I put the telly on.
Have fun

Have you had a look on Amazon or Book People websites? You may be able to get some cheap board books as an alternative to party bags (some people on here got Christmas ones for 45p ish before Christmas). Perhaps you could hire a 'number 1' cake tin? You could then just cover in buttercream in your little boy's favourite colour? hth!
Just had a look on 'bananas' website (offshoot of the book people) and they have some nice kids books which ork out as about £1 each if that's any good

Only a quick response but for my daughters 2nd I cooked a large rectangle cake, drew a number 2 on a piece of paper, cut it out and used it as a template for the cake, cut it out and decorated with lots of sweets and butter icing, it was yummy!
I then used the rest of the cake as little squares and decorated these too, went down a treat!Debt free wannabe

dont worry about games, just get a few toys out and let them play.
I shouldnt worry about party bags either, they are too young to understand and it wont be understood by them, send them home with a piece of cake!Debt free wannabe

Thank you for the brilliant ideas. Went into the Works today and found DK colour books which are also teethers at 2 for £0.99p so I bought a few of them. The cake is a bit of a worry though.

For my ds 1st birthday we had a teddy bears picnic theme. We had a picnic blanket on the floor for the kids to eat their party food and to protect my carpet.
You could play pass the bear instead of pass of the parcel.0 -
that's so sweet jakejenson. Did you give prizes to the 1 year olds? I wouldn't have thought they would know what to do or even know what a prize was : )
