Boiler pilot light has gone out - no heating!

Help please. The pilot light on the gas central heating boiler has gone out so there is no heating or hot water and I don't know how to relight it. If I can get the boiler cover off, is there a switch somewhere I have to press to try and relight it? Why would the pilot light go out if it's protected from the draught? I'm really nervous about causing an explosion if I try and relight it and it's some other fault that's causing the problem but I need to do something as it's freezing!

It's a 4 year old British Gas boiler (F2, whatever that means) and I can't find any separate button on the exterior for being able to relight the pilot light without taking the cover off. After two hours of trying of pushing the thermostat up to 30 and the heating control button on the boiler up to its maximum, the pilot light did briefly kick in kicked & just about warmed the water in the radiators but it's packed up again. Normally if you turn the thermostat up you can hear the boiler fire straight away but it won't repeat it, and the room temperature is only about 17 degrees.

do your neighbours have the same heating as you if they do ask them if they know how to relight it, that would be safer than messing about with things.
i do know that when you are relighting the boiler you need to hold the button that lights the pilot in for about a minute while the system is firing up.
we have also had a similar problem where the pilot kept going out and we had to get the system cleaned by an engineer.

Hi primrose i dont think the f2 has a permanant pilot, it is basically the potterton profile boiler i think( i will be able to tell for defo tomorrow). Have a look under the boiler where the grey trim is and there should be a hole with a red re-set button in, push this and see if it comes back on! failing this you may need an engineer

Thanks gasbag. Have tried to relight without success. Looks like a job for the engineer unfortunately.
