Should I ditch McAfee?

I've had a few issues with malware etc lately, which for some reason my McAfee protection missed.

I currently get the paid version of McAfee free with my o2 broadband, but I'm wondering would I be better off just switching to some of the free protection software out there.

Someone suggested that these might be a better choice:

I swear by Avast. It's free and (touch wood) since using it I've never had any issues!! Free version here http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Yup that's a good combination not so keen on Avast myself bit of a bloat.
