Help working out if low or medium user

Hiya

sorry for the very silly question, im just trying to make sure that im not going to be hit with a big bill for gas or electric.

moved in on the 31st october, took meter reading on 12th jan when electic meter got changed to a new one and am having a really stupid moment where i cant work out if my usage is normal or not. currently paying eon 80 a month to cover both gas and electric but havent had first bill since i switched from british gas when i first moved in.

opening reading for electic - 18345
reading on 12th jan - 18685 so an increase of 340 units

gas opening reading - 5115
reading on 12th jan - 5269 so an increase of 154 units

im taking it that as its only a reading for 2.5 months then i multiply the 340 units by 4.8 to get the full unit use for the year (got that by dividing 12 by 2.5) and then i use the suppliers formulae thats on my bill to get the Kwh for gas and cause my electric meter is already in metric do i need to do anything to get the KWh?

thanks and sorry for the confusing post, i just cant get my head round this.

Yes, that's the idea. The main complication is, of course, that your heating contribution may be significantly higher just now so a straight 4.8 times extrapolation will be a significant overestimate (for most people.)

Check whether your meter is imperial or metric. Only multiply by the final 2.86 if it is imperial.

And electricity meters measure in kWhs. But do check your decimal points are in the right place.
  • thank you for that, its really helped.

so going by the comparison sites im classed as a low user then for my gas as it works out to be approx 8500 Kwh a year but i know it will be lower during summer when heating isnt on and a low/medium user for my electric that works out to be approx 1650 Kwh? (but will go down when i start work and am not home during the day, but will then go up again when partner is home as he will be in during the day)

so now the million dollar question is: will paying £80 a month be enough to keep me in credit with eon on their standard tarriff?

    thanks

  • Why are you paying Eon's standard tariff? On your usage there are far cheaper options, I'm sure. Certainly Ebico for gas should be your first port of call (if you prefer paper bills).

Thank you for letting me know Ebico could be cheaper for me. A bit of background as to why I choose E-on. When i looked into suppliers before i moved in here, eon came up as one of the cheapest, the other being n-power who i cant stand after my ex-flat mate had horrible problems with them. ive never dealth with bills before as previously ex-flat mate did all that so eon looked good to me.

Working out what kind of user I am was to allow me to see if there was a better option for me with suppliers, there are but i would prefer not to chop and change suppliers till i have got a few months worth of bills behind me to get a true idea of my usage and to wait and see if other companies do drop their prices.

E-on V12 looks like it would save me £100 a year if I switched today, I want to stay with one company for both bills and to be honest as I shop in Tesco's getting clubcard points is a bit of a bonus at the moment, but will re-vist in a few months to see if there is anything cheaper because I dont want to pay over the odd's.
