Cassette Recording Help please.

Hello -
I need to read and record something lengthy to send on cassette.
Have just bought a Sony Micro DAB system, which has CD, cassette and radio.
I also have faithful older(much)Philips record/cassette player and radio stack system(F1652 on one part).
What do I need to buy/do, as cheap as poss. needless to say, to record this reading?
My thanks, as always.

Is it just to record straight onto the tape nothing else?

All you need is literally a microphone? (If i've understood correctly?)

make sure you have a mic socket... it's just a 2.5mm jack.

Or..plug the microphone into your PC... record what you want using "sound recorder" and email the file if that's possible? It will be quicker + easier! :)

    Yes, just a straight recording.

I has some microphones once, but have seen some Tesco thingies, like a headset and speaky bit which would be wiser - pages to turn etc and will need to stop at times.

Not sure about your 3rd sentence...

Completely Deugh at your last sentence, but am captivated by 'quicker and easier'. Could you kindly expand on this possibility please?

    As above... also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_Recorder_(Windows)

What version of windows do you have? The older versions, you can only record 60 seconds... then extend it by recording again... and again etc (hassle)

As for line 3... some hifi systems - don't actually allow you to plug in a microphone... only headphones. Thats all I meant.

Just to add - if you have an older version - here's a very basic sound recording program: CLICK ME

If you have XP and a soundcard and a microphone you can use Audacity to record from the mic - Audacity is free.

Thankyou both - already in reading the links info I am completely lost, but will persist.
Am I misreading the jabw piece, which seems only to advise on recording from records?
How do I use my 'putah(bought new, Boxing Day '07) to record a full-length book reading?
I will take a pic of Philips stack front and put it here if I can.

Audacity (link) should do exactly what you want, even if it is over-capable. ;)

Thankyou again for the later replies.
Don't know if I've done this correctly(most unlikely that I have), but:

Right, if I'm understanding this properly - you want to make a long recording, ie: from a book. Then possibly edit it on your computer, then transfer it to tape?

If so, plug a microphone into your computer's microphone socket (at back, near where you plug your speakers in. Record with Audacity, and edit/tweak as needed.

Now the bit where you might get stuck - does your stereo have an input? Ie: from a phono(graph) or stereo? Usually theres a pair of white and red plugs, which you plug a 3.5 pair of phono sockets into - the other end, a 3.5mm jack, will plug into where you plug your computer's speakers.
